INDIA JOURNEYS

india doesn't just show you a different country. it shows you a different way of seeing.

i've been taking people to india for years. it changes them every time. it changed me first.

you've thought about india before.

maybe more than once. maybe for years. there's a pull you can't quite explain — a curiosity that doesn't have a clean reason behind it. you're not sure what you're looking for. you just know something in you wants to go.

and something else has been finding reasons not to.

it feels overwhelming. you don't know where to start. you're not sure it's safe to go alone. you wonder if you're even the kind of person who just... goes to india.

i want to tell you something i've learned from taking many people there for the first time:

the ones who feel the pull but can't explain it are always the ones india changes most.

it doesn't let you stay in your head. it asks too much of your senses, your heart, your sense of proportion. the size and beauty and ordinary-extraordinary humanity of it gets under your skin and rearranges something quietly, permanently.

but only if you actually go.

my connection to india is personal.

my father was born in agra — his family home directly across the road from the taj mahal, my grandparents running a restaurant and rickshaw business nearby. i grew up with india in my heart long before i ever stood in it.

and when i finally did, i understood why it had always felt like more than a destination.

india is where the journeys that changed me most happened. and there is nothing i love more than taking people there — especially for the first time.

WHAT ACTUALLY SHIFTS

you arrive with your usual frameworks for how the world works.

india politely dismantles them.

not harshly — it doesn't need to be. the scale of it does the work. the way ordinary life here holds more colour, more texture, more humanity per square metre than anything you've encountered before. the way people who have so much less move through their days with a kind of ease that stops you mid-step and makes you quietly reconsider what you've been telling yourself about what you need.

i've watched it happen on every single journey i've led. the shift happens at different moments for different people — but it always happens.

you come home with more perspective than you left with. more patience. more gratitude for the small things and less attachment to the things you were worrying about. a quieter sense of what actually matters.

most people say they want to go back before they've even unpacked.

MOMENTS YOU'LL CARRY HOME

❋ holi morning

you wake up not quite knowing what to expect. by the time it's over you're covered head to toe in colour and laughing in a way that feels like your whole body is involved. strangers reached for you with open hands. it is impossible to be self-conscious during holi. that's the point.

❋ the backwaters at dusk

your private houseboat drifts through the kerala backwaters as the light changes. the birds go quiet. the water is so still it looks like glass. nobody says anything for a while. there's nothing to say.

❋ a meal in someone’s home

in thekkady, we cook with a local family — learning how they do it, eating what we made together. it is one of those meals nobody forgets, not because of the food but because of what it feels like to be welcomed like that.

❋ the taj mahal at sunrise

you've seen the photos. nothing prepares you. i've stood there many times and it still stops me. the light at that hour, the scale of it, the silence before the crowds arrive. most people cry. there's no embarrassment in it.

❋ varanasi at dawn

a boat on the ganges as the city wakes up. smoke from the ghats. the particular quality of light and noise and ancient rhythm that exists nowhere else on earth. i find it almost impossible to describe. you'll understand when you're there.

❋ the ganga aarti

bells, chant, incense drifting across the water, tiny lamps released downstream. we watch from the riverbank as the ceremony unfolds. something in the group always settles in those moments. i've never seen it not happen.

SEEN THROUGH THEIR EYES

every trip, someone captures something that says it better than i ever could.
